How to Choose RFID Antennas: Circular, Array and Near-Field

Readers get the credit, but antennas define the read zone. Choose the wrong antenna and a perfectly good reader underperforms. Here is how the main types differ and when each makes sense.

Why Antenna Choice Matters

An RFID antenna focuses the reader’s RF energy into a specific coverage zone. Larger, more focused antennas reach farther; smaller or near-field antennas cover a precise area. Getting this right avoids weak reads and stray reads on neighbouring goods.

Circular Polarized Antennas

Circular antennas radiate a rotating field, which reads tags regardless of their orientation.

  • Best for: pallets, cartons and items that can be oriented in many ways.
  • Trade-off: slightly shorter range than a linear antenna of the same size.
  • Typical use: dock portals, conveyors, and general inventory points.

Linear / Array Antennas

Linearly polarized antennas (and multi-element arrays) concentrate energy in a preferred polarization, which can extend range and tune the coverage pattern.

  • Best for: controlled tag orientation, longer-range portal reads, and shaping a precise zone.
  • Trade-off: more sensitive to tag alignment.

Near-Field Antennas

Near-field antennas read only within a short range — centimetres rather than metres — and produce a tightly bounded volume.

  • Best for: single-item reads, smart shelves, vending and pharmaceutical cabinets.
  • Advantage: eliminates stray reads from nearby items and keeps the zone well defined.

Check the reader’s antenna ports, connectors and frequency band before buying. Multi-port readers let you drive several antennas for a tunnel or a large portal.
